Family Medicine

Family medicine includes comprehensive medical care and coordination for both children and adults. This specialty is broad in nature and can address most medical issues – biological, clinical and behavioral. Tanner Clinic family medicine physicians provide comprehensive care to patients of all ages with all kinds of conditions including bone and joint care, well-woman care and family planning, x-rays, eye care, mental health, care for chronic conditions including diabetes and asthma, and minor surgical procedures.

Comprehensive Family Medicine: Preventive Care

Our family medicine encompasses a wide scope, addressing various medical conditions and preventive care. Our highly trained family physicians actively diagnose and treat acute illnesses, such as infections, injuries, and minor ailments like colds and flu. They actively manage chronic conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, asthma, and heart disease, emphasizing disease prevention and health promotion.

The continuity of care is a defining characteristic of our family medicine providers. They actively build long-term relationships with their patients, gaining insights into each individual’s medical history, family dynamics, and lifestyle factors. This deep knowledge actively enables them to offer personalized and patient-centered care, actively tailoring treatment to meet the unique needs of each family member.

Family Medicine: Health and Wellness

In a family medicine practice, they perform a variety of roles and responsibilities:

  1. Routine Check-ups: Family physicians conduct regular health check-ups and physical examinations to assess their patients’ overall health and identify any potential health issues.
  2. Vaccinations: Family doctors administer immunizations to both children and adults, ensuring protection against preventable diseases.
  3. Health Promotion: Family physicians promote healthy living by providing counseling on nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle modifications.
  4. Acute Care: They manage acute illnesses, injuries, and infections, providing timely and effective treatment.
  5. Chronic Disease Management: Family doctors monitor and manage chronic conditions, working with patients to optimize their health and prevent complications.
  6. Family Planning: Family physicians provide family planning services, including contraceptive counseling and preconception care.
  7. Pediatrics: They care for children, addressing their growth and development, immunizations, and common childhood illnesses.
  8. Geriatrics: Family physicians cater to the unique healthcare needs of older adults, focusing on age-related conditions and age-appropriate screenings.
  9. Mental Health: Family doctors play a critical role in identifying and managing mental health concerns, such as anxiety, depression, and stress.
  10. Referrals: When specialized care is required, family physicians coordinate referrals to specialists while staying involved in their patients’ overall care.

In summary, family medicine is a holistic and patient-centered approach to healthcare that addresses the medical needs of individuals and families across their lifespan. By offering comprehensive and compassionate care, family physicians serve as primary healthcare providers, supporting their patients’ well-being and fostering lasting doctor-patient relationships.

WHAT DO FAMILY DOCTORS DO?

Tanner Clinic family medicine physicians provide comprehensive care to patients of all ages with all kinds of conditions including bone and joint care, well-woman care and family planning, x-rays, eye care, mental health, care for chronic conditions including diabetes and asthma, and minor surgical procedures. Family medicine physicians also screen for early signs of serious conditions, such as cancer, and coordinate care with other medical professionals.

WHEN SHOULD I SEE A FAMILY MEDICINE DOCTOR?

You should see a family medicine doctor for any non-emergency health concern, as well as routine screenings and yearly physicals, including labs as needed, like cholesterol and blood sugars testing, and any needed immunizations.  They handle both acute and chronic medical concerns.

Family doctors and internal medicine doctors at our family medicine clinic in Layton, Utah, become primary care physicians for patients. You need to establish with a primary care physician (PCP) who will be able to take care of any emergencies and follow up with your health concerns. Establishing a relationship with your PCP is advised and necessary in order to have all of your medical needs met. Many insurance plans require referrals from your established PCP before they will cover visits from a specialist. This is starting to become common practice with insurance companies, so even if you do not currently have that requirement with your plan it would be wise to establish with a family doctor or internal medicine doctor now in order to avoid any conflict or headache in the future.
