Sleep Medicine

Our Sleep Medicine Clinic clinic plays a vital role in diagnosing and treating sleep-related disorders, ensuring individuals achieve restorative and healthy sleep patterns.

WHAT DOES A SLEEP CLINIC DO?

One of the primary functions of a sleep medicine clinic is diagnosing various sleep disorders. These can range from common conditions like sleep apnea, insomnia, and restless leg syndrome to less common disorders such as narcolepsy and parasomnias. A thorough evaluation often involves comprehensive sleep studies conducted in a controlled environment.

Our clinic offers a controlled environment for patients to undergo sleep studies. Moreover, these studies monitor various aspects of sleep, including brain activity, heart rate, oxygen levels, and body movements, allowing for accurate diagnosis.

Once a diagnosis is established, sleep medicine clinics work with patients to develop personalized treatment plans. Furthermore, this can include lifestyle modifications, behavioral therapy, or medical interventions such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy for sleep apnea. Continuous follow-up and monitoring are crucial in sleep medicine. Clinics ensure that patients adhere to treatment plans and may make adjustments if needed to optimize results and improve sleep quality.

Sleep medicine clinics provide education and counseling to help patients understand their conditions and the importance of healthy sleep habits. This empowers patients to take an active role in managing their sleep disorders. Our providerse often take a multidisciplinary approach, collaborating with other healthcare professionals, such as pulmonologists, neurologists, and psychologists, to address complex sleep-related issues.

In conclusion, a sleep medicine clinic serves as a comprehensive resource for individuals struggling with sleep-related problems. From diagnosis and treatment to ongoing support and research, these clinics play a pivotal role in helping people achieve better sleep and, subsequently, better overall health and quality of life. WHAT IS SLEEP MEDICINE?

Sleep Medicine is a specialty or sub-specialty that typically falls within the practice of neurologists and/or pulmonologist. It focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of various sleep disorders including obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, insomnia & restless leg syndrome.

Tanner Clinic offers a full-service sleep lab that allows technicians and physicians to determine what is impairing sleep. WHAT TYPE OF SLEEP DISORDERS ARE THERE?

There are various types of sleep disorders. A few common sleep disorders include:

  • Insomnia: this deals with the quantity and quality of sleep. This can be divided into sleep onset or sleep maintenance insomnia.
  • Sleep Apnea: Sleep related breathing disorders that result in abnormal arousals from sleep, typically from abnormal drops in oxygen saturation. This can be divided into obstructive sleep apnea or central sleep apnea.
  • Narcolepsy: Sleep-wake cycle abnormality resulting in excessive daytime sleepiness.

WHEN SHOULD I SEE A SLEEP MEDICINE SPECIALIST?

Anyone who struggles with ongoing or increasing issues with excessive daytime sleepiness should consider further evaluation, especially if it is affecting home and work life. This may include dozing at work, poor productivity due to sleepiness/fatigue, drowsy driving, near accidents or dozing during red lights, being too tired to be involved at home, which may cause marital stress.

THE SLEEP CENTER PROCESS

A primary-care physician generally refers you to the Tanner Clinic Sleep Disorders Center for a comprehensive test and treatment recommendations.

Our sleep study coordinator will verify insurance benefits, pre-authorize the study if required, and obtain any additional information that will help ensure the patient receives the correct testing.

The patient generally stays for two nights at the center, with the first night focused completely on testing. Using electrode attachments, patients are tested for brain waves, breathing habits and heart patterns. Also measured is the pressure of their breathing through a mask.

If your test indicates you have sleep apnea and you require a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine, your doctor will order you a unit from a local medical equipment company that accepts your insurance.

Keep in mind that it can take several adjustments before the setup is right for you. Other options can be recommended if CPAP does not correct your apnea. Sometimes additional testing is required for testing of BIPAP (bi-level positive airway pressure) or VPAP (variable positive airway pressure).

Tanner Clinic Sleep Disorders Center also conducts Multiple Sleep Latency testing for the diagnosis of narcolepsy (excessive daytime sleepiness).

Special arrangements can be made for patients who need to do their testing during the daytime due to shift work.
