The Tanner Clinic Laboratory provides accurate, timely results to meet the needs of our physicians and patients. This service allows our providers to identify and track many medical conditions and more effectively treat our patients — whether they’re the parent of a second-grader with a possible strep infection or a young couple awaiting the results of a pregnancy test.
Tanner Clinic’s main lab is based on the Layton campus, and satellite facilities are conveniently located in each of the neighboring clinics in Kaysville, Syracuse and Roy. Tanner Clinic also offers a lab setting in the OB/GYN Center in Layton, which allows for faster turn-around time for pregnancy testing and other OB screening tests.
Labs are also staffed during after-hours and urgent-care clinics.
State-of-the-art diagnostic equipment
The Tanner Clinic Laboratory conducts testing under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA). These federal regulations require semiannual onsite surveys to verify compliance with all applicable federal regulations. Tanner Clinic has consistently worked over the years to maintain compliance by using state-of-the-art equipment and by training well-qualified individuals.
An average day sees a staff of six medical technologists and technicians, most with 4- or 2-year college degrees, who focus on providing reliable results in an efficient manner. In addition, experienced phlebotomists are available to draw blood from even the most nervous patients.
Types of lab testing processes
The lab has five different departments to offer a wide range of testing. These divisions are:
Performs tests on blood to help diagnose and monitor different health conditions using various chemistry panels such as cholesterol.
Performs testing on blood to detect infections as well as deficiencies and other blood disorders like anemia and leukemia.
Monitors the activity of blood-thinning agents like Coumadin and tests blood before surgery to verify the absence of clotting deficiencies.
Uses rapid technology and culture to detect the presence of harmful bacteria and viruses. Susceptibility testing is also performed to determine the most appropriate antimicrobial agents for treating bacterial infections.
Detects various antibodies produced by the body in response to infectious agents. Testing detects antibodies specific for such infections as infectious mononucleosis, H. pylori and rheumatoid arthritis.
How to receive your lab results
Test results are most often conveyed and discussed by the ordering provider.
Lab test results also can be easily obtained through the Next MD Patient Portal. (If you’d like more information on setting up your own Patient Portal to link online with your physician, see these instructions.)
In addition, lab results can be retrieved by visiting the lab facilities in each Tanner Clinic location and showing proof of identification.
Lab results cannot be conveyed over the phone.

Tanner Clinic provides a fully equipped diagnostic radiology department to provide patients and physicians with quick results. The department provides services Monday through Saturday and during evening hours at most locations.
Using a full range of non-invasive diagnostic equipment, Tanner Clinic produces x-rays to rule out fractures or find foreign objects within the body. Diagnostic equipment includes three x-rays units, two fluoroscopy C-arms and DEXA scans for bone density.
Radiologic procedures are performed by registered radiologic technologists (RT) and licensed practical technicians (RPT). Common diagnostic x-ray procedures include chest, abdomen, spine and extremities.
An RT has completed two years of training in an accredited college or university and passed a national board examination. An RPT has one year experience with x-ray exams and has passed a State of Utah test. All x-ray staff members are licensed by the state’s Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL). To keep registry and license current, x-ray personnel are required to attend continuing education courses.
All diagnostic x-rays need to be ordered by a physician with a proper history indicating the reason for the x-ray. X-rays are interpreted by a radiologist and results are generally available withing 24 hours, Monday through Friday. Tanner Clinic partners with Utah Imaging Associates for radiologist coverage.

For those weeks when you can’t sleep a wink
Science is now confirming what our moms always told us: Go to sleep. NOW.
But, what if you can’t?
What if you snore through the night and then wake up with a headache? And, what if you just can’t keep your eyes open at work?
If you’re having any of these troubles, you may be experiencing sleep apnea — a condition in which you stop breathing for brief periods during your sleep.
That’s where the Tanner Clinic Sleep Disorders Center can help.
Left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to a number of potentially deadly results:
▸ High blood pressure
▸ Heart attacks
▸ Coronary artery disease
▸ Restless leg syndrome
▸ Fatigue that can lead to auto- and work-related accidents
See your primary care physician if you are suffering from any of these symptoms. Your doctor will evaluate you and refer you to the Tanner Clinic Sleep Disorders Center for comprehensive testing and treatment recommendations.
Tanner Clinic Sleep Center Director Dr. Gary Alexander, who is board certified in sleep medicine, is an expert in sleep deprivation treatment.
We pride ourselves on our prompt turn-around time — your physician usually receives the results within three business days.
The Sleep Center maintains the highest standard of care, with four comfortable suites with queen-size Sleep Number beds. Each private suite includes individual bathroom and shower facilities.
The Sleep Center Process
A primary-care physician generally refers you to the Tanner Clinic Sleep Disorders Center for a comprehensive test and treatment recommendations.
Our sleep study coordinator will verify insurance benefits, preauthorize the study if required, and obtain any additional information that will help ensure the patient receives the correct testing.
The patient generally stays for two nights at the center, with the first night focused completely on testing. Using electrode attachments, patients are tested for brain waves, breathing habits and heart patterns. Also measured is the pressure of their breathing through a mask.
If your test indicates you have sleep apnea and you require a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine, your doctor will order you a unit from a local medical equipment company that accepts your insurance.
Keep in mind that it can take several adjustments before the setup is right for you. Other options can be recommended if CPAP does not correct your apnea. Sometimes additional testing is required for testing of BIPAP (bi-level positive airway pressure) or VPAP (variable positive airway pressure).
Tanner Clinic Sleep Disorders Center also conducts Multiple Sleep Latency testing for the diagnosis of narcolepsy (excessive daytime sleepiness).
Special arrangements can be made for patients who need to do their testing during the daytime due to shift work.
