Frequently Asked Questions

Looking into General Surgery procedures? Here are some FAQ’s about some our surgeons provide.

Gastrointestinal (GI) & Abdominal

What is a hernia, and how do I know if I have one?A hernia happens when tissue pushes through a weak spot in muscle, often seen as a bulge. Common signs include pain, discomfort, or swelling.
Do all hernias need surgery? Not always. Some small hernias may just be watched, but surgery is usually recommended to prevent complications.
What are the symptoms of gallbladder problems?Symptoms may include abdominal pain (especially after eating), nausea, bloating, or indigestion.
How do I know if I have appendicitis?Common signs include sudden lower right abdominal pain, nausea, and fever. Appendicitis usually requires urgent surgery.
What’s the difference between diverticulosis and diverticulitis?Diverticulosis means small pouches in the colon; diverticulitis is when they get inflamed or infected.
What is a hiatal hernia? It occurs when part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm, sometimes causing reflux.
What is a colostomy?A colostomy creates an opening in the abdomen to allow stool to pass into a bag. Some are temporary, others permanent.

Breast

How can I tell if a lump in my breast is cancer? Not all lumps are cancer, but any new lump should be checked with imaging or a biopsy.
When should I see a doctor about breast changes?See your doctor if you notice a lump, pain, nipple changes, or skin changes.
What does breast mass removal involve? The surgeon removes the lump, often through a small incision. Recovery is usually quick.

Skin & Soft Tissue

What are “lumps and bumps,” and are they dangerous? Most are harmless fatty growths (lipomas) or cysts, but they should be checked to be safe.
What is a pilonidal cyst? It’s a cyst near the tailbone that can cause pain or infection. Treatment may include drainage or surgery.
When should I have a mole removed? If a mole changes shape, color, or size, it should be checked. Removal is quick and usually painless.

Anorectal

What causes hemorrhoids?Straining, constipation, or pregnancy can cause swollen rectal veins.
When should I see a doctor for rectal bleeding?Any new or unexplained bleeding should be checked to rule out serious causes.

Endoscopy & Screening

What’s the difference between a colonoscopy and an EGD?A colonoscopy looks at the colon; an EGD examines the esophagus, stomach, and upper intestine.
Is a colonoscopy painful? No, you’re given sedation, so most people don’t feel anything.
How often should I have a colonoscopy?Every 10 years for most adults, sooner if you have risk factors.

General & Advanced Surgery

What does a general surgeon do?General surgeons treat a wide range of conditions involving the abdomen, skin, breast, and more.
What does “minimally invasive” surgery mean?It uses small incisions with cameras and instruments, leading to less pain, smaller scars, and faster recovery.
How does robotic surgery work? The surgeon controls robotic instruments that allow for more precise movements and faster recovery in many cases.

Other Procedures

How is a Nexplanon implant removed?A small cut is made under local anesthesia, and the implant is gently taken out. Most patients only feel mild pressure.
What is a port-a-cath?It’s a small device placed under the skin to make IV treatments easier. It requires simple maintenance and regular flushing.
