Obstetrics and Gynecology

What is Obstetrics and Gynecology?

Obstetrics is the medical specialty dealing with the care of women and their children during pregnancy (prenatal period), childbirth, and the postnatal period. Gynecology is the branch of medicine that deals with diseases and disorders of the female reproductive system and health maintenance for women.

What Does a OBGYN Do?

An OBGYN doctor specializes in both the reproductive health of a woman and the care of women and their children during pregnancy. They take care of important issues such as birth control, childbirth and menopause along with annual well-care visits. As a general rule it is suggested that a pelvic exam and pap-smear should be done once a year if you are over 21.
