FINDING BALANCE WITH SOCIAL DISTANCING

During these unprecedented times, anxiety, apprehension, fear, sadness, and despair are all common emotional responses. With this prolonged uncertainty, the term “social distancing” was created with the end goal of “flattening the curve.” Research has already demonstrated how social distancing effectively reduces the spread of the coronavirus. However, we are social creatures and distancing is difficult. That is why it is important to find balance with social distancing.

A dear friend and fellow psychologist recently made a Facebook post, which highlighted that the term “social distancing,” may have been better described as “physical distancing,” or reducing unnecessary physical interactions and contact with those outside our immediate homes. As mental health providers, the last thing that we want is for individuals to isolate or withdraw from social contact with loved ones or friends, especially during a time of crisis and pandemic.

1. Be Mindful – Utilize relaxation and deep breathing techniques, live in the present, engage in yoga and spirituality

2. Fresh Air and Sunlight – Go outside and get some Vitamin D

3. Seek and Offer Support – We are stronger together

4. Be Compassionate to Yourself and Others

5. Engage in Meaningful and Purposeful Activities

6. Eat a Balanced Diet

7. Find a New Hobby or Rekindle an Old One

8. Engage in Daily Hygiene – Even if you are not leaving the house, shower and change those pajamas

9. Engage in Physical Exercise – Go for a walk and get the heart pumping
