LEARN MORE ABOUT HYPERHIDROSIS and MIRADRY

Excessive sweating can cause social anxiety and disrupt your daily routine. You may spend an abnormal amount of time changing your clothes or wake up at night to change your sheets. This type of sweating isn’t associated with exercise or heat.

Fortunately, there is a solution provided by Dr. York Yates at Tanner Clinic in Utah. MiraDry is an FDA approved solution for excessive underarm sweating.

Here is your guide to hyperhidrosis and MiraDry:

WHAT IS HYPERHIDROSIS (EXCESSIVE SWEATING)?

There are two types of hyperhidrosis; primary focal or essential hyperhidrosis and secondary hyperhidrosis.

PRIMARY FOCAL HYPERHIDROSIS

is where the nerves that control your sweat glands become overactive. Usually, sweat gland nerves are triggered by a rise in temperature, exercise, or stress and nervousness. This is important because sweat is a natural response by the body to help regulate your temperature.
When sweat glands are overactive, sweating occurs without any of the triggers. It can occur on your palms, your underarms, and your face.
There’s no underlying medical reason for hyperhidrosis but there may be a genetic cause since hyperhidrosis is often found in family members.

SECONDARY HYPERHIDROSIS

is where excessive sweating occurs because of an underlying medical condition. This type of hyperhidrosis occurs not just on the palms, the underarms, or on the face, but occurs on the whole body.
Underlying medical conditions that could cause hyperhidrosis are:

  • Diabetes
  • Menopause
  • Thyroid conditions
  • Cancer
  • Low blood sugar
  • Heart attacks
  • Infections

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF HYPERHIDROSIS?

You may be wondering whether you have hyperhidrosis or are experiencing sweating due to other factors. There are a few clear symptoms that tell you whether you have hyperhidrosis. They are:

  • Cold, clammy palms
  • Clammy or wet soles of the feet
  • Frequent sweating
  • Clothes that get soaked due to sweating

People who are diagnosed with hyperhidrosis often go through a period of social anxiety due to their excessive sweating. They may avoid social situations, shaking hands, or making physical contact.
More serious cases of hyperhidrosis can lead to bacterial or fungal skin infections.

DOES HYPERHIDROSIS EVER GO AWAY?

Often, hyperhidrosis begins in adolescence. If due to genetic predisposition, hyperhidrosis can sometimes resolve over time as you age. In cases of secondary hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating can be resolved if the primary cause or underlying condition is resolved.

For primary hyperhidrosis, there are various options available to patients including surgery and MiraDry. Dr. York Yates offers a non-invasive treatment option called miraDry that takes under an hour. Not only does miraDry assist with hyperhidrosis, it can also reduce underarm hair growth.

MiraDry works by targeting and destroying the sweat glands. Once the sweat glands are destroyed, they are permanently removed.

HOW TO STOP EXCESSIVE SWEATING

Beyond antiperspirants, there are various medical treatments for hyperhidrosis including iontophoresis, Botox, oral anticholinergic drugs, surgery, and MiraDry.

At Tanner Clinic in Utah, Dr. York Yates specializes in the MiraDry treatment process. MiraDry utilizes thermal heat energy to target and eliminate the sweat glands in your underarms. Currently, MiraDry is not recognized as a treatment for the palms of your hands or the soles of your feet.

HOW LONG DOES MIRADRY TREATMENT LAST?

Because MiraDry completely removes the sweat glands that cause excessive odor or sweating, the treatment is permanent.

Underarm sweat glands only account for 2% of your body’s total sweat glands. Therefore, it is safe to remove those glands and the removal of 2% of your sweat glands will not affect your body’s ability to cool itself down.

Studies of those who received the MiraDry treatment show that nearly 80% of underarm sweat glands are destroyed by the MiraDry treatment.

IS MIRADRY COVERED BY INSURANCE?

Although MiraDry is approved by the FDA, most insurances do not cover MiraDry or other treatments for primary hyperhidrosis. However, if you have an HSA or FSA account, you may be able to use those funds for your MiraDry treatment.

MiraDry can be accomplished in as little as a single treatment over an hour.

HOW MUCH DOES MIRADRY TREATMENT COST IN UTAH?

The cost of MiraDry is set by the manufacturer at $2125 in Utah. However, Dr. York Yates offers his Utah MiraDry patients a discount and frequently posts special offers for the treatment.
