Brett Burtenshaw, MD

Brett Burtenshaw, MD, lists among his special interests sports medicine and geriatrics. The two may seem to be dissimilar, but it was this broad range of interests that drew the physician to family medicine.

Dr. Burtenshaw, who joined Tanner Clinic in July 2015, practices at the Syracuse clinic. He settled on family medicine after residency training in several specialties. When he couldn’t decide, he realized, “If I chose family medicine, I could see a little bit of everything.”

Dr. Burtenshaw, a native of Blanding, Utah, received his B.A. from Weber State University. He traveled to Dominica, an island in the eastern Caribbean, to earn his M.D. from Ross University School of Medicine.

He completed his family medicine residency with Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center, Janesville, Wisconsin, part of the Mercy Health System.

Dr. Burtenshaw has lectured and taught workshops at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Among his topics was casting, which aligns with his interest in sports medicine. The physician, whose father, Art Burtenshaw, was a coach at Ben Lomond High and San Juan High in Blanding, describes himself as belonging to a “football family.”

He has also received specialized training in geriatrics and diabetes and is certified in family medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine.

Dr. Burtenshaw is married and he and his wife, Kellie, have two children. He enjoys traveling, along with sports, running and weightlifting.
