Dr. Ben Van Leeuwen joins Tanner Clinic as a Psychiatric Physician. He sees patients aged 13 and up and believes psychiatry is all about the patient and not necessarily their health conditions – that you really get to know them and treat underlying issues. He received his Bachelor of Science in Public Health at Brigham University, a Master of Public Health at the University of Miami, and a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Dr. VanLeeuwen completed his residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler as a Psychiatry Resident Physician. He is a member of the Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians and the American Psychiatric Association. His practice is located at our East Layton location in the west wing basement.
Dr. Van Leeuwen believes that in his line of work, everyone needs help at some point in their life – and it is okay to ask for it. Dr. Van Leeuwen states he perused psychiatry because “every patient is interesting and different. Even two patients dealing with depression aren’t going to have the same treatment plan or cope with it the same way.” Being persistent and determined is a trait that makes him successful; figuring out what will work to help his patients feel better and receive the best care possible is what being a good Psychiatric Physician is all about to Dr. Van Leeuwen.
Dr. Van Leeuwen’s father was in the Air Force, so he grew up all over the country. He spent some time at Hill AFB and graduated high school in Dayton, Ohio, which was one of his favorite places he live. Dr. Van Leeuwen is married and has two children. He loves doing anything together with his children as long as everyone is having a good time. Currently, his daughter loves to go Pokémon hunting! Some of his personal hobbies include listening to non-fiction audiobooks and True Crime podcasts. Dr. Van Leeuwen is a fan of the Serial and Morbid series. His favorite TV show is The Office and especially likes seasons 1-4. He also likes the Harry Potter books, The Goblet of Fire being his favorite in the series, with Ron Weasley being his favorite character.
Dr. Van Leeuwen’s happy place is in a movie theater because you can unplug, relax, and enjoy the movie you are watching. One movie he can watch over and over again is Saving Private Ryan. His go-to snack at the movies is popcorn mixed with peanut M&M’s, along with his guilty pleasure of a Diet or Zero Sugar Dr. Pepper.
