Loida Viera-Hutchins, MD, is a board-certified physician in allergy and immunology and clinical pharmacology. She works alongside Dr. Ray Firszt in the Murray location and Dr. Douglas Jones at the Layton Parkway building on the second floor.

Dr. Viera-Hutchins received her medical school education at Tulane Medical School where she graduated from Alpha Omega Alpha. She completed her internal medicine residency at Yale University followed by fellowship training in allergy and immunology and clinical pharmacology from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Prior to joining Tanner Clinic, Dr. Viera-Hutchins was an assistant professor of allergy immunology in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Utah. Also, she currently serves as Division Chief of Allergy Immunology for Primary Children’s Hospital.

Along with the Tanner Clinic allergy team, Dr. Viera-Hutchin’s primary focus is innovative treatments for food allergies, termed oral immunotherapy (OIT). When asked about the work she does, Dr. Vierra-Hutchins says “My passion is medicine. I enjoy taking care of my patients and seeing the remarkable improvements we can make in their lives. Our field of Allergy/Immunology is particularly exciting as we are able to personalize care to help patients with severe and difficult-to-treat allergies and asthma, chronic hives, mast cell disorders, and disorders of the immune system that increase susceptibility to recurrent infections.”

Dr. Viera-Hutchins’ additional focus is providing high-quality care for patients experiencing allergy, asthma, or immunology complications. She specializes in treating pediatric and adult conditions including nasal and ocular allergies (hay fever), chronic sinusitis, asthma, chronic hives, Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE), mast cell activation syndrome, mastocytosis, and immune deficiency disorders that present with recurrent or unusual infections.

Some traits that make her successful lie in listening to patients and paying attention to all of their medical history and how it relates to the problems of her field. In addition, she is continuously learning and keeping up with the current literature in the field. She said, “It is an amazing time in medicine where the basic science knowledge of how the immune system works leads to the development of specific and targeted medications that address pathways that go awry resulting in illness.”

Her happy place is living in Utah. She loves the mountains and hiking. Dr. Viera-Hutchins first lived here from 2007-2008 then left to pursue additional medical training. However, she never forgot the beauty of Utah. Her family moved back in 2015 and are now proud to call Utah home.

Dr. Viera-Hutchins is fluent in Spanish.
