Martin Bertram, MD joins Tanner Clinic as an Interventional Spine and Pain/EMG subspecialty provider at our East Layton clinic on the main floor, west wing. He has a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Loyola University in Chicago, attended the Loyola Stretch School of Medicine for his MD, participated in a transitional internship at the Resurrection Hospital/Loyola, and completed a PM&R residency at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago/Northwestern University. His military experience includes 8 years in the Air Force reserves and 4 years active-duty Air Force with an honorable discharge at the rank of Major. Dr. Bertram is also a published author in the fields of surgery, cardiac physiology, heterotopic ossification, complex regional pain syndrome, and an award of excellence in electromyography research.

Dr. Bertram is a part of the American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, the American Board of PM&R Pain Medicine Subspecialty, and the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine. He is an Ogden Valley Monastery water board member and Fellow of the American Association of Electrodiagnostic and Neuromuscular Medicine. He is a specialist in interventional spine care, diagnostic EMG, spinal cord stimulator implantation, endoscopic lumbar discectomy, and osteoporotic spine fracture management. When asked what traits make him successful, Dr. Bertram said he keeps moving ahead with evidence-based medicine without jumping on snake oil bandwagons. He doesn’t quit until he can offer answers or solutions for his patients – or direct them to someone who can better assist them. He believes as a PM&R provider, “[he helps] people help themselves while holding strong to the mantra of doing no harm. The body has an incredible capacity to heal or accommodate neuromusculoskeletal conditions. [He] just helps the body along in the process.”

Dr. Bertram grew up in a variety of places including Taiwan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois. His family includes his wife, a horsewoman and flight attendant, a daughter who works as a collegiate development director, a daughter who is an archeologist, and his son who works at Lund University as an industrial design project assistant in Sweden! His favorite book is Charles Dickens’s “Tale of Two Cities,” his favorite movie is “The Water Boy,” and his favorite song is the Beatles’ “Blackbird.”

Some hobbies and interests include water/snow sports, hay farming, supporting his wife’s endurance horse events, and playing the violin. His happy place is in deep water slalom ski starts, exploring treed ski runs at a relaxed pace, kayaking in Causey Reservoir, and running farm equipment. Guilty pleasures include “Man Cave” and “She Shed” build-outs, anything involving diesel, wiring power to barns, and betting attached to his cars and trucks for the unique uses each one has.
