Robert A. E. Summerfield, MD, is a neurologist at Tanner Clinic. His practice is located on the second floor of the Layton Antelope Building B.

Dr. Summerfield chose neurology as a specialty because of the problem-solving required to treat disorders of the brain and nervous system.

He now brings his extensive and varied expertise to Tanner Clinic, where he practices at the Layton campus’ south building.

Dr. Summerfield has a lengthy list of educational achievements, beginning in Toronto, Canada, where he earned a B.S. in nutritional studies from the University of Toronto.

He initially considered philosophy as a career, and so earned a Master of Philosophy from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.

Moving back into the scientific world, Dr. Summerfield went to Merton College, Oxford University, in the U.K., to obtain a Master’s of Science in human biology. He returned to the University of Toronto to complete his M.D.

Dr. Summerfield conducted his medical internship and neurology residency at the University of Toronto, where he was appointed as chief resident.

Dr. Summerfield practiced general neurology at a clinic in Toronto, Canada, for seven years before moving to the United States in 2003. Since that time, he has worked in Salt Lake City-based neurological clinics. In all locations, he has conducted nerve conduction and EMG studies.

In addition, he performed inpatient work at Alta View Hospital, as well as St. Mark’s Hospital, where he also taught in the St. Mark’s Family Medicine Residency Program. He is board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Dr. Summerfield is married and has two daughters. He enjoys movies and tennis.
