WHAT DOES AN EATING DISORDER SPECIALIST DO?

Tanner Clinic Eating Disorder Specialists work with patients who have eating/feeding disorders or disordered eating. They are qualified to write meal plans and give guidance to patients with various diseases in order to help them improve their health status. Some people without a disease or disorder may request additional guidance from a dietitian or other health professional in order to prevent or manage them. This is especially true for those who have a family history of those conditions.

Our Eating Disorder Specialists work alongside your doctor and our behavioral health team to help you achieve your health goals. They will track your progress as a team to make sure you are achieving maximum results in order to help you improve your health status. Some of the many areas they focus on and treat include:

  • Eating Disorders (including but not limited to):
    • Anorexia nervosa
    • Bulimia nervosa
    • Binge-eating disorder
    • Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder
  • Behaviors and attitudes where weight loss, dieting, and control over food are becoming primary concerns

WHAT ARE THE QUALIFICATIONS OF AN EATING DISORDER SPECIALIST?

Tanner Clinic has a variety of qualified Eating Disorder Specialists including

  • Registered Dietitians
  • LCSW – Licensed Clinical Social Worker
  • CSW – Clinical Social Worker
  • CMHC – Clinical Mental Health Counselor

To become a licensed eating disorder counselor, you first must earn a bachelor’s degree – typically in psychology, counseling, or social work. Then specialized classes and training are taken to understand the complexities surrounding disordered eating and therapy techniques. In some instances, an exam may also be taken for certain credentials and licenses.

WHAT IS EATING DISORDER THERAPY?

Eating Disorder therapy is a process that helps reduce/eliminate health harming behavior, identify the function of health harming eating and exercise behavior, as well as increase personal insight and alternative healthy coping strategies.

WHAT IS HEALTH HARMING BEHAVIOR?

Examples of health harming behavior and beliefs that may be addressed include restricting food intake, over eating, binge eating, purging behavior, diet pill or laxative abuse, over exercise, obsessive ‘clean’ eating, yo-yo dieting, and negative body image.

 

WHAT DOES AN EATING DISORDER THERAPIST DO?

Eating Disorder Specialists can also help those with an unhealthy relationship with food or exercise, even if they do not meet diagnostic criteria for an eating disorder. Treatment is most successful in conjunction with a multidisciplinary team including a dietitian and medical monitoring by a Primary care provider. Methods for therapy vary based on an individual patient’s needs.
